Early Life and Roots in Italy

Sonia Gandhi was born as Sonia Maino on December 9, 1946, in a small village near Vicenza, Italy, and grew up in a tight-knit family in Orbassano, near Turin. Raised in a traditional Roman Catholic household by her building contractor father, her early life was marked by a quiet European upbringing far removed from the worlds of global politics or public spotlight.

As a young woman with a passion for languages, she traveled to England to master English, enrolling at a language school in Cambridge. That decision altered the trajectory of her life forever.

The Cambridge Romance

In 1965, while studying in Cambridge, a chance encounter at a small Greek restaurant brought her face-to-face with Rajiv Gandhi, who was then studying mechanical engineering at Trinity College and belonged to India’s most prominent political family (as the grandson of India’s first prime minister, Jawaharlal Nehru).

  • The First Impression: Sonia later recalled being instantly struck by Rajiv’s gentle manner, kind disposition, and striking good looks.
  • A Cross-Cultural Bond: Despite coming from entirely different cultural backgrounds—one rooted in rural Italy and the other in the heart of India’s political legacy—the two formed a deep, fast friendship that blossomed over student gatherings.

Transition to India

After dating for a few years, the couple married in February 1968 in New Delhi. This milestone marked a dramatic transformation for the young Italian woman:

  • Embracing a New Culture: Sonia transitioned from a Western lifestyle, trading contemporary clothes for traditional Indian saris, learning Hindi, and immersing herself deeply in Indian customs, food, and culture.
  • A Quiet Family Life: Initially, Rajiv showed no interest in politics, allowing the young family—which soon grew to include their children, Rahul and Priyanka—to live a relatively peaceful, private life away from media scrutiny.

Decades before stepping into her eventual role as one of India’s most powerful political figures, Sonia Gandhi’s story began simply as a cross-cultural romance between a young Italian student and an engineering student in Cambridge.
